Weaving Technique Series I - Hemstitching

In the first class in the weaving series, you will learn various techniques for creating interesting hemstitching patterns.  Hemstitching is a technique used to secure the first and last weft picks of your woven cloth.  It is used to prevent raveling at the beginning and end of a piece.  In addition to forming an edge finish that doesn't add bulk to the end of a fabric, hemstitching is quite useful for creating spaces or a lace-like effects.

Materials and Supplies needed: Rigid heddle loom, minimum 7” weaving width • 8 dent reed • 2 shuttles • 1 pick-up stick  • The Weaver's Idea Book by Jane Patrick • Needle/darning needle • Safety pins/paper for measuring • Tape measure • Scissors - Yarns 2 skeins - 1 must be contrast: Berocco Modern Cotton;  Cascade Ultra Pima; or Tahki Stacy Charles Cotton Classic

There is HOMEWORK for this class - Homework MUST BE DONE before class! Warp for 71", 6 inches in reed (48 ends); Weave “junk” header; Weave 1” in weft yarn.  71" warp will be enough for all of the classes, providing you do not remove your work from the loom and re-tie between classes.  If you choose to weave a longer section for each class, you will need to account for additional yarn for warp and weft.  Additionally, if you are not taking all four (4) classes, you may not need as much warp, depending of the length of your weaving.  Call the shop if you have any questions..
